SAFETY TIP
The message is simple. Water, Rest & Shade. Say it, remember it, do it. These three words save lives.
Water
Make sure you drink before feeling thirsty. While working in the heat drink 1 cup of water every 15-20 minutes. During extreme heat, alternate water with an electrolyte beverage to help prevent a heat illness.
Rest
When heat stress is high, take regular breaks. The length and frequency of breaks should increase as the temperature rises. Breaks should last long enough for you to recover from the heat.
Shade
Take your break and rest in a cool or shaded location to recover from the heat. Direct exposure to sunlight significantly increases the heat load on the body.
Don’t forget the “Rest”. Some workers might be tempted to skip breaks. In hot conditions, skipping breaks is not safe. Continuous physical activity in hot conditions causes the body’s core temperature to rise faster than it can cool itself, increasing the risk of heat exhaustion, heat stroke, muscle cramps, fatigue, poor concentration, and accidents.
