VMW Spirit Award Winners 1st Quarter 2026

This award highlights five nominations that best exemplify each of the core values.

Build Trust

Daniel Hughes (South Texas)

While covering a weekend shift at the H-E-B Harlingen 2 project during a high wind advisory, Daniel assisted the store in securing the parking lot fence and windscreen, as this posed a potential risk to vehicles and pedestrians. While the issue fell outside our scope of work, Daniel prioritized client and public safety and acted quickly. His actions earned direct appreciation from our client.

Be Professional

Jody Beckcom, Steve Schulte, Colt Horvath, Nick Hernandez (San Antonio)

During planning for the Texas Health and Human Services Alamo Hall Geriatric Maximum-Security Unit Renovations project, the team identified a live overhead power line within the planned work area where crane, scaffolding and lift activities were to take place. The team held multiple coordination meetings and developed several solution options to fully eliminate the electrical hazard in a manner acceptable to our client. Team member safety was prioritized above all else throughout the process.

Live Teamwork

CJ Roberts (San Antonio)

As the San Antonio team prepared for a critical pre-proposal meeting for the Victoria County Mental and Behavioral Health Facility at the City of Victoria Public Safety Headquarters, CJ’s involvement proved invaluable given his role as superintendent on the recently completed facility and his strong working relationship with City Manager Jesús Garza. Without hesitation, CJ made the two-and-a-half-hour drive to Victoria, using his deep knowledge of the site and logistics to ensure the meeting ran smoothly while allowing the team to remain focused on their objectives. His preparation and local insight helped deliver a standing-room-only meeting with more than 100 subcontractors in attendance, impressing both Victoria County and the owner’s representative, Square One Consultants, and setting the tone for a highly successful procurement process.

Be Passionate

Janet Perez (Houston)

Janet was instrumental in the success of the Harris County Emergency Service District (ESD) No. 7 Spring Fire Department W.W. “Cotton” Weaver Training Center project, building trust with our client, subcontractors and design team while holding all parties accountable through every phase of construction. Her preparation, professionalism and commitment were evident in every meeting, including after-hours ESD board meetings, and in the strong client relationships she cultivated. Her passion, proactive analysis and ability to manage budgets and changes with fairness and integrity consistently reflected a strong focus on both the project and the client’s best interests. As the project neared completion, Janet stepped into the field to ensure all scopes were finalized, demonstrating her reliability, dedication and willingness to support the team wherever needed.

Think Like an Owner

Dayan Colon, Cody Wilson (Houston)

High winds in Houston caused multiple sections of project fencing to be dislodged at the City of Houston North Belt Police Station project one evening. Although not assigned to the project, Dayan responded promptly to Cody’s request for assistance and arrived that evening to help secure the site. Demonstrating a strong sense of responsibility and teamwork, Dayan stepped in to ensure the jobsite was protected. Together, Cody and Dayan restored all fencing that night, safeguarding the site from potential unauthorized access.
