SpawGlass-South Texas Construction Summer Camp

Now in its ninth year, our SpawGlass-South Texas Construction Summer Camp program was created in partnership with Harlingen Consolidated Independent School District to introduce seventh and eighth grade students to the world of commercial construction. The week-long program, coordinated by SpawGlass-South Texas Executive Assistant Tracy Lopez, welcomes 30 students each year and is designed to educate, inspire and entertain through a series of interactive lessons and hands-on activities.

Construction experts from SpawGlass teach campers about topics such as personal protective equipment (PPE), safety, lean scheduling and more, while volunteers from local industry partners contribute by teaching sessions on subjects ranging from architectural design to mechanical systems.

Beyond the classroom setting, the program offers students an immersive experience of real-time construction projects. Campers try out trade-focused skills like drywall, masonry and concrete setting before the week wraps up with a tour of an active construction project. This year, students visited our Quinta Mazatlan Center for Urban Ecology jobsite in McAllen, where they saw the lessons of the week come to life.

Planting the seed of curiosity at an early age helps open doors students may not have considered. By introducing them to rewarding career paths through real-world experiences, we’re helping inspire the next generation of construction professionals and strengthen the future of our industry.
